Beta Factors: How They Can Be Used In The Current Situation

Ever since the turn of the century, world stock markets have been very volatile. In other words there have been significant movements (up or down) in share prices. This phenomenon has been evidenced by the collapse in recent years of the share prices of the dot com companies (e.g. Yahoo, Amazon etc.) and the sharp falls in the share prices of telecommunication stocks (e.g. British Telecom, Marconi etc.). Yet despite these events there is very little emphasis placed on measuring the volatility of stocks.

The aim of this article is to explain one method of measuring the volatility namely beta factors and how investors can interpret this information. The article aims to state how investors can use beta factor analysis to their advantage when there are political uncertainties affecting markets. Though some stockbroker firms calculate the beta factors of certain stocks quoted in their respective stock exchanges, investors have little access to these figures. In more developed markets many stockbroker firms do have access to beta factors but it is only in recent years that investors have access to this information.

BETA FACTORS:

The beta of an investment is a relative measure of the systematic risk of an investment. In other words it measures the specific risk of the company's shares relative to the market as a whole. In general, the sign of the beta (+/-) indicates whether, on average, the investment's returns move with the market or in the opposite direction to the market. The scale or value of the beta indicates the relative volatility of the particular stock.

A beta of +0.25 for instance, would indicate that on average, the investment's returns move one quarter as much as the markets do in the same direction. If the market rose by 10%, the investment would be expected to rise by 2.5% but on the other hand if the market fell by 10% the investment would be expected to fall by only 2.5%. A beta of -0.1 would indicate that on average, the investment's returns move one tenth as much as the market's do, but in the opposite direction. If the market rose by 10%, the investment would be expected to fall by 1%. Hence we can summarise a number of situations:

If Beta > 1 this means that the investment's returns will move, on average, in the same direction as the market's returns, but to a greater extent.

If Beta = 1 this means that the investment's returns will move, on average, in the same direction as the market's returns, and to the same extent.

If 0 -1, to the same extent if Beta = -1, and to a greater extent if Beta < -1. In practice it is rare to find negative beta stocks since they go against the trend of the market. One possible sector that could consist of negative beta stocks is the gold industry that tends to go against the trend shown by equity markets.

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES:

In world markets, beta factors can have a major influence on the investment strategies of investors. If the analysis is to be believed then in times of a bull market (rising markets) investors should hold stocks with a high positive beta factor since they should outperform the market. A practical example of this was in the late 1990s concerning the dot com stocks. At this time the bull market has reached its peak and those investors who held dot com companies (that had high positive beta factors) made excess returns and did far better than the relative index performances.

However in times of bear markets (falling markets) then investors should target low beta stocks since they should outperform the market. An example of this can be found in the UK where two low beta FTSE stocks (Tesco and Centrica) outperformed the market in a falling market.

USING BETA FACTORS IN THE PRESENT SITUATION:

The current world political situation is probably the worst it is for many years. World markets are falling at a rapid pace. What does beta factor analysis teach us about an investment strategy in this situation? Firstly, however good a company is it likely that in such circumstances most will encounter falls in their share prices.

However during this time a number of alternative investments that have negative beta factors have appreciated in value. The prime example of this is gold. Over the past twenty years when there was a strong equity bull market, the price of gold has fallen significantly. In addition to this shares in the gold sector have performed badly when compared to equities. However in the past few years it is noticeable that in the political uncertainty that has arisen in the world that the price of gold has shown material gains at a time when equity markets have recorded sharp falls.

Another commodity that has done well is oil that has seen a significant increase in its price per barrel over the past few months. In line with gold, the oil price has suffered over most of the past twenty years (at a time when equity prices were on an increase) and it is only in recent years that the oil price has shown a recovery.

CONCLUSION:

Beta factor analysis is a useful technique that has enabled many international investors to achieve satisfactory returns in the past. If one looks at the trends in world markets then one can see that in a bull market those investors that have followed a selective aggressive portfolio (i.e. including shares with beta factors of over 1 times) have generally outperformed the market.

However the wheel has changed. We are now in the stage of a bear market. The current political uncertainty has made things extremely difficult for investors. Should they get out of world markets since a conflict will almost certainly mean falling equity prices. Or should investors move to alternative investments with negative beta factors such as gold and oil? After all in case of a conflict these commodities will almost certainly rise and will probably go against the trend of equity prices. The answer will very much depend on how the current political situation develops. However investors will do well if they include gold in their investment portfolios.

Quality Residential Water Filtering Systems Can Clean All Of The Drinking Water In Your Home

There are many benefits of having residential water filtering systems. Some of these benefits might be obvious to the average consumer, while others are less commonly known. This is due to the fact that many people do not realize just how bad their tap water is to their health, and their wallet.

They also tend to let through more of the synthetic chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides. Additionally, you will not find a PH balance in most of the water from these systems.

The best residential water filtering systems are those that that will perform well in all aspects, and address all of the concerns about tap water at one time. The systems that do this best are those with two filters. Each filter has its purpose, and together they clean the water to a level better than any other system.

Two filters are used with these systems: one of copper and/or zinc, and one of carbon. The carbon filter is that used on most residential water filtering systems. It cleans the water of some organic compounds, chlorine, and can restore the PH balance in the water. The filter of copper and/or zinc cleans the water of synthetic chemicals and other contaminants.

Many whole house water filtering systems use a carbon based filter, reverse osmosis, or distillation. Some multi stage water filtering systems use reverse osmosis in conjunction with a carbon based filter. While this is better than reverse osmosis alone, the process still strips water of its natural properties and minerals.

It is only when the carbon and copper and zinc filters are used together that the best results will be achieved. In order to reap all of the benefits of residential water filtering systems, you should make sure that the system you choose has a dual filter using metals and carbon.

I Was In An Accident, Will My Car Insurance Rates Go Up?

You were on the phone, got distracted and before you knew it traffic had stopped, giving you no room to stop and you rear end the girl in front of you. Or, let's say you're driving along and a deer jumps out and rams into the side of your door.

Now, let's say you need to file and claim and get your car fixed. But, are your rates going to go up?

In the first case, more than likely they will depending on how much your insurance company pays out to fix both cars and medical bills if anyone was injured.

But, in the second example, since this will be a comprehensive claim your rates should not see an increase at your renewal. Unless you have a long history of hitting deer then the people from PETA will be out to get you. Or if you file a lot of small glass damage claims then your rates could be affected or you may have to pay a higher deductible for comprehensive in which case small glass damage will be less than your deductible and you will pay out of pocket.

Part 2: How long does an accident stay on my record?

Ok, so back to the example where you rear ended someone. We have already established that you are going to see your insurance rates go up. Now, we need to find out how long and how much will they go up.

State insurance boards usually allow insurance companies to charge for a accident for 3 years from the day they started charging for it. Not from the time you got into the accident. You got in the accident in December and your policy runs from October to April. Your rates won't be affected until April of the next year and the surcharge will drop off 3 years from that April.

How much will your rates go up? Are they trying to get back the money they paid out for my claim? You can usually expect a rate increase of between 20-40% on average per six months. They could go up even more if you lose some discounts you were getting, such as a claim free discount.

The increase is not a recoupment of the monies paid out by your insurance company. It is designed to charge you a premium based on the risk, or chance, that you will get into another accident in the next 3 years. You are a higher risk to the insurance company and they are able to charge you for the higher risk you present to them.

If it was based on how much the insurance company paid out then you wouldn't be able to afford it if you totaled out your 2004 Nissan Maxima at $25,000 and you had to pay that back within the 3 year surcharge period. Makes sense? Good, now get off the cell phone!

Is Stress a Badge of Honour?

I was speaking with a client this week about her work ethic and how this affected her stress levels. She told me that she wears her stress like a badge of honour. She is proud of how much stress she can take. She is rewarded for taking on more projects than one person can reasonably handle, and her friends admire her for being able to handle her stress.

Sounds great, right? There is only one minor problem she hates the pressure and it is making her ill. Ah. Suddenly its not so great being superwoman the expectations people have of her (including her own) are too high, and too demanding. Fortunately she is coming to realise that this is not the way it has to be.

Im pretty sure shes not alone. I seem to remember doing something similar in a previous life taking on too much and feeling important because I had pressure. Do you ever feel the same? Its a sad situation when people are rewarded for how quickly they can grind themselves into the ground.

In case youre unsure, let me make my position on this perfectly clear stress is not something to be proud of. I do not admire stressed people. I admire happy, balanced, successful people. Success is not (to me) working an 80 hour week, and being available by mobile phone at 4am on your holiday.

I would much rather say I took 5 overseas holidays this year than I had a nervous breakdown. Ok, I exaggerate slightlybut only slightly. Wearing your stress like a badge of honour is dangerous to your health. Stress culture is similar to drug culture the people inside think its cool, the rest of us think fools.

Because of the harmful effects of stress, companies are required by law to provide reasonable stress management measures for their staff. Personally, I think individuals need to provide reasonable de-stressing measures for themselves. And the first one to adopt is to treat stress appropriately.

Think about your relationship with stress is it healthy? Do you use your stress to get you out of the way of a speeding bullet or as a signal that something needs to change. Or do you wear your stress like a badge of honour? How about a different badge of honour be proud of how relaxed you are! Or is that too radical for the noughties?

Albert Bierstadt - A Short History of an American Painter

Albert Bierstadt was born in Solingen, Germany in 1830. His family moved to Massechusetts, when Albert was two year old. He returned to Dusseldorf in Germany to study art between 1853 and 1857. His first painting was purchased by the Boston Arthenaeum and a successful future was sealed.

He was one of the Hudson River School participants an informal group of like-minded painters who were challenged by the great landscapes of America. He loved mountains and visited the White Mountains often. Their paintings were detailed, romantic pieces with great attention to the light. He traveled west to capture the open spaces a number of times in sketches and drawings, returning to New York to complete his paintings. In 1863, he traveled west with author Fitz Hugh Ludlow, whose wife he would later marry. He loved publicity and was carried away by the uncritical enthusiasm of the general public rather than heeding the more carefully considered criticism of those who were better informed.

He sold his paintings easily for reasonably large sums, but the art critics were harsh on his methods and selection of subjects. They were also critical of his ego and overuse of some techniques, but people just kept on buying his works. He had become internationally renowned for his enormous paintings of the American west, and the public and the institutions kept paying record prices (some over $35,000) for his works. He was a prolific artist, and it is estimated that he sold over 400 paintings. His popularity and wealth grew, and he built an amazing mansion until the public simply did not want to buy any more of the detailed landscapes and he declared himself bankrupt in 1895. He was the central figure in the Rocky Mountain School of Painting.

During his life Albert received man honors from Germany, America, Austria and France and he became a member of the National academy of Design in New York.

His paintings are popular and can be found in galleries particularly in America.

Albert died in 1902.

The possibility of obtaining any of the great artworks by this artist is quite small, although from time to time they become available, but usually one needs to bid against international galleries for the artwork. Making A Homemade Air-Conditioner

Here's a cheap and simple way to build an air-conditioning unit using simple household items. To build the unit, the items and materials you will need are:

Fan
Wood (pieces of 2x4)
Metal container (such as a garbage can, approximately 15 inch tall by 13 inch diameter)
Circular saw
Nails and a hammer
Aluminum metal repair roll, thin sheet (18 inch x 5 ft, available as a standard size at a hardware store)

The fan I used is roughly 8 inches in diameter. This diameter will roughly dictate the size of the opening for the duct (but fan size is not critical). This opening will be made out of pieces of 2x4.

Using the circular saw (making sure to wear eye and ear protection and following safe operating procedure) cut pieces of 2x4 and nail them together to make an 18 inch x 8 inch frame (the external height is 18 inches, and the opening is 8 inches wide). The aluminum roll will attach to this frame, to form a spiral duct.

To form the spiral duct align the outermost end of the aluminum roll with one of the 18 inch sides of the 18x8 inch frame, such that the inside surface of the roll touches the side of the frame. Adjust the alignment so that the edges of the roll and frame are flush, and then nail them together. Now, align the other end of the roll to the other side of the frame, such that the outside surface of the roll touches the side of the frame. Once again, make sure the edges are flush and nail them together. You should now have a spiral shaped duct.

Next, put the metal container inside the spiral duct, adjusting its position and that of the opening so that the air blows roughly tangentially past the container on its way in, and with ample room to exit. Now, fill the container with cold water and put a lot of ice in it. The temperature of the water should drop to a few degrees above freezing. The outside of the container will quickly become cool, since metal is an excellent conductor of heat.

Lastly, place the fan in front of the opening, and put a sheet or whatever you have (which serves as a lid) on top of the duct, leaving a small opening for the air to blow out of, after making its way around the duct. You may also want to seal part of the opening above the fan with an old newspaper so that theres no unnecessary gap above the fan where air can escape before being cooled. This is a crude design for sure, but it allows for easy fine-tuning, before making something more permanent.

Now, turn the fan on and the air coming out should be cooler. For my own unit I measured the exiting air as 2-3 degrees Celsius cooler than the air going in (I used a digital kitchen thermometer to measure). The ice in the container should last a few hours, and when youre done you can dump the water down the drain.

The advantage of this design is that you are utilizing the entire surface area of the metal container to cool the air.

The dimensions and sizes I used work together nicely. But of course, many variations are possible.

Some tips:

You can put salt (NaCl) into the container along with the ice. Due to the endothermic reaction between salt and water, you will get a further lowering of temperature. It may be a useful experiment, to see how much salt to add to get a target drop in temperature.
Setting fan speed on low rather than high may result in cooler air coming out since the air stays in contact with the cold container longer.
Well-placed fins inside the duct may help to improve the flow and mixing time, thus improving the amount of cooling. This would be a good project for future work.
In winter you can make blocks of ice outside, and store them in your freezer for when you need them in the summer. I figure that to hold you over on those really hot days you need around 30 ice blocks, each 4x4x8 inches, and one block for each sitting. Remember, this is free ice and you wont be loading your freezer.

Exactly How Strong Is That White House Fence?

Ed Henry for CNN reported that a man carrying a suspicious package tried to jump the White House fence. A response team put on their funny hazmat suits to gather up the package.

The package is being investigated. It probably holds the guys lunch, maybe more. Read about it at http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/04/white.house.jumper/index.html

The Secret Service arrested 44-year-old Roger Witmer for trying to jump the fence. Tom Mazur of the Secret Service said Roger didnt make it. Evidently he needed more training along the Mexican border. Roger lives in Washington, D.C. so his relatives will not have a difficult time visiting him in jail.

According to CNN, Mazur said Witmer will be charged with unlawful entry, disorderly conduct and destruction of government property. He had no previous record with the Secret Service. Evidently he was just getting started.

The package was in a plastic bag. I guess Witmer dropped the bag onto the White House lawn as he was trying to scale the fence.

According to CNNs story, Mazur said the incident happened shortly before noon on Sunday. President Bush, who had just wrapped up a late morning bike ride off-site, was on his way to the White House complex at the time.

The President probably hardly noticed the commotion.

Witmer, according to CNN, will be charged with:

Unlawful Entry: Even though he never entered.

Disorderly Conduct: He should have checked in at the gate.

Destruction of Government Property: He must have scratched the paint.

Now if the fence is so flimsy that it can be damaged by a person climbing over it, what the heck is the purpose of the fence? The White House fence encloses 18 acres of land. I read that at http://www.whitehousehistory.org/06/subs/06_b.html

The last time I saw the fence it looked pretty sturdy and difficult to climb. How could a plastic-bag-carrying climber damage it?

I just think that the President did show up. I think he said, Looks like someone knocked a paint chip off the White House fence. How did that happen?

Thats probably how not-so-swift Witmer got charged with Destruction of Government Property.

Well, they are going to have his brain examined arent they?
